DAY 1 Cairns – Port Douglas – Daintree River via Mossman – Cape Tribulation – Cooktown

Depart Cairns early morning and drive north along the beautiful coastline with views of the Coral Sea and the mountains covered in dense tropical rainforest. Stop in Cooya Beach where we walk the coastline with our Aboriginal guides, who talk about their land, their ancestors and show us the traditional way of hunting. Continuing further we reach the Daintree River, we cross by ferry, before continuing to Cape Tribulation. The Daintree National Park, a UNESCO listed rainforest, is the oldest in the world. In Cape Tribulation take a nature walk through the rainforest, visit the beach and enjoy a picnic lunch before continuing on our next stage. From Cape Tribulation we travel into the Bloomfield, where a 4 x 4 vehicle is required. Drive through Wujal Wujal, a former mission and Aboriginal community, with our next stop being Lions Den a historical pub built in 1875, portraying an authentic Australian Outback atmosphere. Further see the Black Mountains an interesting formation of granite rocks and with great importance to the local Aboriginal people, as a place with many legends. If time allows visit Archer Point, a point overlooking the sea with fantastic views. Arrive in Cooktown, discovered by Cpt. Cook during a forced stop due to damage to his ship “Endeavour”, late afternoon. (L)

DAY 2 Cooktown – Laura via Battle Camp Road – Cairns

Enjoy breakfast in the hotel followed by a short stroll along the streets of this historical town. Optionally visit the Cpt. Cook museum, with interesting memorabilia and Aboriginal art from Cook’s first visit to the area. After an early lunch depart Cooktown and drive to Laura via Battle Camp Road, a road that, depending on the season, is accessible only by 4×4 (Battlecamp may not be open during the wet season and after heavy rain). This area is known for the historical battles Edmund Kennedy had with the Aboriginal people in 1878. Battle Camp will give you a good taste of what the area and Cape York 4×4 tracks have to offer. In Laura take a short walk to see the Aboriginal rock paintings the town is famous for. Return to Cairns via the inland highway through the Outback. Arrive in Cairns early evening. (B)
